“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James 4:4).
The horrific spiritual cancer called worldliness is a mindset which is focused upon sensual, earthly things. This deadly poison pollutes everything it touches and kills everyone who embraces it.
James is quite plain about how dangerous worldliness is. He minces no words in explaining how completely incompatible it is with one desiring to be genuinely righteous.

Worldliness is spiritual adultery. A Christian is a member of Christ’s bride, the church. Essential to a godly marriage is an exclusive love and devotion for one’s mate. To divide your love and loyalty between Christ and the world is to be a spiritual adulterer.

Worldliness is spiritual treason. A Christian is a member of Christ’s army, the church. Integral to your enlistment is an oath of loyalty. To have divided loyalties between Christ and His arch enemy (worldliness) is to be a traitor.
