The Body-Soul Connection

“The light of the eyes rejoices the heart, and a good report makes the bones healthy” (Proverbs 15:30).

Every human is a three-part being—body (soma), soul (psyche), and spirit (pneuma) (1 Thes. 5:23). In ways fully known only to God, there is an intimate body-soul-spirit connection that the field of medicine terms “psychosomatic”. It has wisely given rise to the study and practice of holistic healing.

The Scriptures clearly affirm that a person’s overall well-being is traced to more than the chemical health of his body. Consider these examples:

  • Joy in the heart has a positive impact on your body’s health (Prov. 15:30).
  • Envy in one’s spirit negatively impacts your body (Prov. 14:30).
  • A cheerful heart is like medicine for the body (Prov. 17:22).
  • A broken spirit dries up one’s physical frame (Prov. 17:22).
  • David’s unconfessed sin made his bones grow old (Ps. 32:3).
  • The guilt David felt weighed heavy upon His soul and drained his body of vigor and vitality (Ps. 32:4).

As a human, you are not a body which happens to have a soul; you are a soul housed in a body. Taking proper care of your soul is also good for your body. News which rejoices the heart also improves the body’s health.
