Cause and Effect

“Cease listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge” (Proverbs 19:27).

The cosmological argument for the existence of the living God is securely rooted in the immense number of examples of cause and effect in our physical world. An egg is laid by a bird. An oak tree grows from an acorn. A stroke occurs because something has gone wrong in your body.

Every effect has a cause. Therefore, who or what caused our massive universe? That simple question has only three possible answers: 1) Nothing (It has always existed.) 2) It caused itself (i.e., the effect was the cause.) or 3) It was caused by Someone/something greater than it. Both simple logic and the basic laws of science categorically eliminate the first two possibilities. The third possibility is precisely how the Bible begins: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

In the spiritual world, the law of cause and effect mirrors the physical world. If you stop diligently pursuing spiritual growth and development, you will experience spiritual atrophy and eventually die. Should your hunger and thirst for righteousness wane and become choked out by the cares of this world, you will starve spiritually. If you stop listening to wise instruction and desiring to increase in understanding, you will stray from the words of knowledge and the path which leads to eternal life.

Your spiritual wealth and well-being are caused by your choices and decisions today.

          Choose well.
