“And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country” (Hebrews 11:15-16).
There are many differences between the faithful (like Abraham and Sarah) and the unfaithful (like Lot’s wife).
For Abraham and Sarah, everything they prioritized as highest in value was ahead of them. They desired to walk with God, living by faith, and seeking the eternal city of the heavenly country.
For Lot’s wife, everything she prioritized as highest in value was behind her in the degenerate and doomed city of Sodom. She chose to disobey God’s command to not look back because her affections were on the things of this world.
Being a disciple of Jesus necessitates putting your hand to the plow and not looking back (Luke 9:62). The eternal city of the heavenly country is ahead of you, and your undivided focus needs to be upon it. There’s no looking back when you walk by faith.
Remember Abraham and Sarah.
Remember Lot’s wife.
