“Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king, and do not stand in the place of the great; for it is better that he say to you, ‘Come up here,’ than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince whom your eyes have seen” (Proverbs 25:6-7).
Being an “influencer” on digital media is coveted by many of today’s young people. Not only does the status of “influencer” indicate the size of your popularity and clout, it also can become lucrative if/when it is monetized. To get to the top of the “influencer” mountain, you cannot be shy about self-promotion. Here is the sand upon which this narcissistic mountain is built.
Self-promotion is building a sand castle which will ultimately be swept away. It clearly is an appealing temptation because of the potential, short-term benefits it may bestow. The higher that sand castle is built, the greater will be its fall—that day when you are placed below a competitor.
God’s counsel is not self-promotion, rather it is: “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips” (Prov. 27:2).
