What Matters Most

“What is desired in a man is kindness…” (Proverbs 19:22).

The Hebrew word hesed (translated here as “kindness”) is a word so rich and meaningful, “it is difficult, if not impossible, to precisely convey the full meaning of the term in just one English word or phrase”, especially when it is used in reference to the character of God (Expository Dictionary of Bible Words, p. 634).

At the source of hesed’s richness is the flowing spring of loyalty and devotion to the solemn promises attached to a covenant. Because of this aspect of an irrevocable commitment to one’s word, hesed can be translated as “steadfast love”.

Because of this commitment at the source of hesed, the word is flavored with the thought of kindness towards those who are fellows in the covenant. Thus, hesed can be translated as “kindness”.

Also rooted in this commitment at the source of hesed is the idea of mercy towards those who are fellows in the covenant when they have failed to keep their part of the covenant. Rather than wrath for failure, there is pity and mercy with such shortcomings. Thus, hesed can also be translated “mercy”.

Integrity. Steadfast, unwavering loyalty to one’s word. Lovingkindness. Mercy. Hesed is what you desire most in your fellow human beings.
