The Superiority and Uniqueness of Jesus

God…has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:1-3).

When Jesus asked His disciples in Caesarea Philippi “Who do you say that I am?” and Peter’s response was “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15-16), Peter’s statement was not an exaggeration. This precise and accurate declaration is the cardinal truth of Christianity.

Hebrews 1:1-3 provides an excellent and evidenced commentary on Peter’s good confession.

Proof that Jesus is the Christ includes He is God’s superior and final spokesman (His anointed prophet); “by Himself He purged our sins” (His anointed priest); He “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (His anointed king).

Proof that Jesus is the Son of the living God includes He made the worlds; He is the brightness of God’s glory; He is the express image of His person; He upholds all things by the word of His power.

Like the angels, Jesus is a heavenly being. Unlike the angels, He has a more excellent name/superior authority and rank than they.

Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.
