An Unwanted Treasure

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus discusses two different types of treasures—those accumulated on earth (Matthew 6:19) and those laid up in heaven (Matthew 6:20). The location of your treasure is a clear indicator of where your heart is (Matthew 6:21).

For all who are pursuing earthly treasures and are despising the riches of God’s goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering by not repenting in response to His goodness, the apostle Paul identifies an additional treasure their hard and impenitent hearts are storing up: They are treasuring up for themselves God’s “wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God” (Romans 2:4-5). Those who do not obey the truth but obey unrighteousness in this life are storing up an unwanted treasure of indignation, wrath, tribulation, and anguish (Romans 2:8-9).

No treasure could be more horrific and unwanted than an everlasting supply of endless indignation, wrath, tribulation, and anguish.

Is this the eternal treasure you want to have?
