Unity in Christ

“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:19-22).

Since the Tower of Babel, every humanly devised plan for unity which has been implemented has failed. Worldwide unity among such diverse languages, cultures, and customs is beyond the scope and ability of human wisdom. It is clearly above our “pay grade”.

As described by Jesus in John 17, abiding unity among humanity only comes through faith in the apostles’ doctrine and is modeled after the complete harmony which the Father and Son have (vv. 20-21). It does not happen accidentally, and it cannot occur when founded upon the inherently and fatally flawed premise of “Let’s all agree to disagree” over matters of faith.

The unity found in Christ allows all people of this world to be citizens in the same kingdom, sons in the same family, and living stones (1 Peter 2:5) in the same temple. Only in Christ are we inseparably united via our citizenship, sonship, and priesthood. In Christ we have a mutual and pre-eminent love of the same country, family, and religion. In Christ there is genuine unity.
