As the apostle Paul nears the end of his sentence-long inventory of spiritual blessings found in Christ in Ephesians 1:3-14, the final items are listed with these words: “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory” (vv. 13-14).
What a spiritual blessing is “the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation”. Without the word of truth:
- Purification of your soul would be impossible (1 Peter 1:22).
- Becoming a son of God (i.e., spiritual regeneration) would be impossible (1 Peter 1:23).
- Spiritual victory over sin and Satan would be impossible (Romans 1:16-17).
- The hope of heaven would be unknowable (Colossians 1:5).
How essential it is that we diligently apply ourselves to the studying and rightly dividing of God’s word of truth! (2 Timothy 2:15).
