“Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel” (Proverbs 27:9).
Like certain scents and soothing oils, certain people nourish your soul. Their presence, encouragement, and wise guidance are a wonderful oasis for you. Even when they have had a “crucial conversation” with you, the truth they have spoken in love to you are wounds which help (Prov. 27:6).
Joseph of Cyprus—who was called Barnabas (“the Son of Encouragement”—Acts 4:36)—was such a spiritual blessing among first century Christians. His sacrificial generosity (Acts 4:37), words of admonition to young Christians (Acts 11:23), determination to help Saul of Tarsus’ increase his usefulness in the kingdom (Acts 11:25-26), and a willingness to stubbornly believe in John Mark when others doubted him (Acts 15:36-39) were a welcomed tonic to many brethren.
If he personally could offer his hearty counsel to you today, he would encourage you that with purpose of heart you continue with the Lord (Acts 11:23).
