“A righteous man who falters before the wicked is like a murky spring and a polluted well” (Proverbs 25:26).
Because of its essentiality to life, water is a precious resource, especially in places where rainfall and other natural sources of water are sparse. Isaac and his servants had recurring quarrels over the wells of water dug in the Valley of Gerar (Gen. 26:17-22). Imagine the severe disappointment of desperately needing water and locating a nearby spring or cistern with this valuable resource only to discover the water in it is undrinkable—murky, brackish, polluted.
In like manner, what deep disappointment is felt when a righteous person compromises his values and priorities. Instead of imitating the inspiring moral courage of righteous Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, and Daniel (Dan. 1, 3, 6), the path of least resistance is chosen, and he caves to peer pressure like Peter did in the courtyard of the high priest (Mark 14: 66-72).
What a disappointment to God and man when the righteous falter before the wicked!
