Seeking One’s Own Glory

“It is not good to eat much honey, so to seek one’s own glory is not glory…Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” (Proverbs 25:27; 27:2).

Self-promotion is a fool’s errand (Prov. 25:6-7). Narcissistic tendencies will usually result in you realizing that you are not “a legend in your time”, but rather, you are simply “a legend in your own mind.”

A healthy self-esteem built solely upon genuine achievement is a good thing. But it is the genuine achievement which is more important and valuable than the self-esteem.

As noted in Proverbs 25:16, it is possible to have “too much of a good thing.” Unsolicited praise from others (Prov. 27:2) is far better than purposefully seeking your own praise; this is especially true if you are the one singing your praises the loudest. Don’t do it.
