Choosing Your Druthers

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold” (Proverbs 22:1).

“If I had my druthers, I would choose…” my mother used to say. “Druthers” was short for “I would rather”. Life is full of druthers—choices between two or more options. Choosing your druthers has a real and significant impact on the quality of your life.

Solomon states which druthers a wise person chooses when his options are a good name or great riches. A well-earned reputation of honesty, integrity, kindness, and decency is a better choice than an abundance of wealth. Excellent character is superior to material opulence.

Solomon also states that if he had his druthers between loving favor within his circle of family and friends and a treasure chest of silver and gold, the wise option is loving favor. Money is the inferior pursuit.

Your life is a finite number of days in which you exchange time for various things of great or little value. The foolish choose material gain over the highest of valued commodities—a good name and loving favor.

Choosing your druthers well requires wisdom.
