The Most Obvious Defect of Hypocrisy

“The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart” (Proverbs 20:27).

Though your spirit may be well hidden from others in the deepest recesses of your being, its thoughts and intents are openly manifest to Jehovah. His omniscience is complete. He understands your thoughts, comprehends your path, is acquainted with all your ways, and knows every word your tongue utters (Ps. 139:1-4). Your soul is a well-lit room with no shadows. There is no creature hidden from His sight, all things are naked and open to Jehovah.

This is why hypocrisy is so foolish and deceitful. Its most obvious defect is the lie that there are blind spots in God’s omniscience, that He cannot see the uncleanness and lawlessness which is beneath the whitewashed veneer of human pretense. Jesus did (Mat. 23:27-28).

Let’s God’s Son be true, and every man a liar on this matter: “For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, nor hidden that will not be known. Therefore, whatever you have spoken in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have spoken in the ear in inner rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops. And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!” (Luke 12:2-5).
