“Friends” of the Wealthy and Poor

“Wealth makes many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend…All the brothers of the poor hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He may pursue them with words, yet they abandon him” (Proverbs 19:4, 7).

A true BFF is a blessed treasure. Acquaintances and “fair weather friends” are a dime a dozen. In comparing these two proverbs, one easily discerns the fact that one’s bank account can generate its own peculiar variety of pseudo “friends”.

The wealthy has many “friends”. Like the prodigal son, as long as he had his father’s inheritance to spend, he had a bevy of “friends”. “Every man is a friend to one who gives gifts” (Prov. 19:6).

But when the prodigal’s inheritance disappeared, his “friends” did too. His “friends” go far from him. Though he may pursue them with words—thinking he can somehow persuade them to not be the superficial cads they actually are, they abandon him and leave him to live in the filthy pigpen alone.

          Some “friends”!!
