The Mouth of Fornication

“The mouth of an immoral woman is a deep pit; he who is abhorred by the Lord will fall there” (Proverbs 22:14).

Given all that Solomon has already told his son about the extreme and horrific dangers of fornication (Prov. 5:1-23, 6:20-27), he still had additional counsel for him.

The place where this wickedness begins its overt way into one’s life is the mouth. “For the lips of an immoral woman drip honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil; but in the end, she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lay hold of hell” (Prov. 5:3-5). Her words say that a man’s hungry ears want to hear. This is the launching point of immense trouble. It is the first misstep of a journey into a deep and horrific pit.

Everyone who chooses to ignore God’s somber and repeated warnings do so to their own heartache and destruction. Running through a divine stop sign is folly. It is to disdain God and His loving counsel. It is to make God your enemy. It is to decide to willingly self-destruct.

Such folly, such disdain for Jehovah and his warning of the second death (Rev. 21:8) results in the Lord’s rightful abhorrence.
