Strong and Faulty Towers

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe. The rich man’s wealth is his strong city and like a high wall in his own esteem” (Proverbs 18:10-11).

Our world is rife with insecurity; therefore, every human yearns for security and peace of mind.

A frequently believed lie of Satan is that wealth and personal possessions can deliver on the earnestly yearned for security and peace of mind. Many a rich person has viewed his wealth as a strong and impregnable wall of security. He is living in the ultimate gated community financially. He is safe, untouchable. He is immune to life’s vicissitudes and crushing misfortune.

The patriarch Job was of the billionaire class of his generation (Job 1:3). Yet, trouble came to him (Job 3:26). Financially ruined in one day (Job 1:13-19), any peace and security his wealth provided evaporated like fog in the hot morning sun.

The rich farmer viewed himself and his future as immune to life’s misfortunes. He was all ready to enter retirement with a lavish nest egg. He was all set to begin taking his ease, eating, drinking, and being merry the night he died (Luke 12:19-20). What a faulty tower of security he trusted in. “He who trusts in his riches will fall” (Prov. 11:28).

The only strong and secure tower for you in this life is God and His character. His name—I AM WHO I AM—reflects the imperishable holiness which makes His being and His government sure and uncontestable. Those who place their confidence in Him—i.e., the righteous—will have an impregnable refuge. There is always security and peace of mind in the strong tower of Jehovah and His name.
