Grandfathers and Fathers

“Children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father” (Proverbs 17:6).

Good health which enables you to live long enough to see and enjoy your grandchildren is an easily overlooked blessing from God. Old age is promised to no one. Therefore, reflection followed by gratitude is ever appropriate.

Even though Abraham died at a good old age (175) and full of years (Gen. 25:7-8), he only lived fifteen years after his grandsons Esau and Jacob were born (Gen. 21:5; 25:26). One can only wonder how much enjoyed watching his son’s twins grow from newborns to teens.

Because of the certainty of one’s death, being a grandparent or a great-grandparent ought to be a prized blessing of growing old. Grandchildren in their innocence and vigorous growth are a balm to the soul of their aging ancestors.

The challenge of successfully raising wise and virtuous children is not for the man who is faint of heart or weak in character. His tireless and careful leadership of the “heritage of the Lord” (Ps. 127:3) placed in his care speaks volumes about his character and godliness. He and his wife have rightfully earned their kudos. Well done.
