Instruction and Correction

“A fool despises his father’s instruction, but he who receives correction is prudent” (Proverbs 15:5).

No one likes to be wrong, but, sadly, not everyone does what is needed to prevent a lifetime of recurring folly.

Because he is unteachable, a fool never gets off the hamster wheel of folly. Regardless of whose company he is in, he invariably believes himself to be the smartest person in the room. Starting with the arrogance of rejecting instruction from his own parents, a fool’s lifetime is spent despising the instruction of those who could help him live wisely.

Instead of humbly receiving the loving and wise aid of those who desire to help him to not return to the vomit of his folly, a fool rejects correction. He would rather fail by graduating valedictorian from the School of Hard Knocks than receive correction which could make him prudent.

All of us begin life with foolishness bound up in our hearts (Prov. 22:15). Sadly, though, some despise instruction and reject correction, and thus, they never leave the shackles of folly.
