“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, ‘Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven’” (Hebrews 12:25-26).
This is the ultimate and climactic warning of this powerful treatise of exhortation.
The God who in these last days spoke to us by His Son warns us to not refuse to listen to Him who speaks. Jesus is His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased. Hear ye Him! This new and better covenant is the final revelation of God’s word and will. Do not reject it.
Just as every transgression and disobedience of the Law given through angels received a just recompense of reward and not one of these who refused to heed God’s voice when His words inaugurated the old covenant at Mount Sinai went unpunished, how much greater guilt will be incurred if any of us apostatize from the One who speaks from heaven?
If the death penalty was the just and appropriate penalty for the crime of refusing to obey God’s Law containing carnal ordinances, the eternal death penalty (I.e., punishment in hell) is the just and appropriate penalty for refusing to obey God’s law containing spiritual ordinances.
See that you do NOT refuse Him who speaks!
