“For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises” (Hebrews 6:10-12).
“The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary.” In both the physical and spiritual realms, a lack of a strong work ethic is a sure recipe for disaster and eternal ruin.
Unfortunately, Satan has been quite effective in spreading the lie that having a spiritual work ethic is unnecessary, if not downright evil. According to the father of lies, everyone who faithfully teaches Christians to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (as the inspired apostle did in Philippians 2:12) is a legalist who believes eternal salvation is earned, not inherited. His contention is based upon a false dilemma.
Daily food is a blessing from God (Matthew 6:11); it is not, however, unconditional. “If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Many physical blessings are conditioned by God upon obedience to His expectation of work. No work, no blessing.
The same is true of spiritual blessings. Spiritual growth requires diligence (i.e., a vigorous work ethic). Genuine faith in God requires work and personal labor.
Spiritual sluggishness (i.e., laziness) will not result in the realization of your hope of heaven. Obedient faith diligently working and laboring in love will.
