“But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner” (Hebrews 6:9).
The word “better” is a significant word in Hebrews. In the remainder of book, the Bible student will read of “better hope” (7:19), “better covenant” (7:22), “better promises” (8:6), “better sacrifices” (9:23), “better possessions” in heaven (10:34), “better country” (11:16), and “a better resurrection” (11:35).
In this passage, the inspired penman envisions his readers wisely making the choice to embrace “better things”. Like every one of us, the original readers had to choose between a Christian who was spiritually fruitful or one who was spiritually bankrupt and blind. The reward of choosing wisely could not be more blessed; the results of choosing foolishly could not be worse.
To enjoy the better things found in Christianity, your focus must be on those things which accompany salvation—spiritual growth, diligence, steadfastness, perseverance. By His divine power God has provided us with all things that pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
These “better things” are what God desires us to pursue and enjoy.
