“Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away…how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation…” (Hebrews 2:1, 3).
Spiritual faithfulness necessitates constant attention and diligent pursuit. Without it, you will drift and lose your great salvation.
The word translated “drift” (pararreo) is only used here by a New Testament penman. Non-Biblical authors, however, employed it to describe various mishaps:

When an arrow has accidentally fallen out of a quiver.

When a ring has—unbeknownst to its owner—slipped off a finger.

When an idea has come into one’s head but escaped before it could be retained and used.

When a boat has missed its pier because it had been swept downstream by an underestimated current.
Spiritual inattentiveness as a Christian is not harmless or insignificant. Losing an arrow, a ring, or an idea is not as horrific as losing your soul. Missing a desired destination like a pier is not as calamitous as missing heaven.
Beware of Drifting!
