“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9).
Because Jehovah is holy, holy, holy (Isaiah 6:3), His wrath is impartial. He is no respecter of persons (Romans 2:11). He righteously condemns and will fully punish all ungodliness and unrighteousness in Gehenna, a lake of everlasting fire and brimstone. Without divine intervention, spiritually bankrupt sinners are helpless and hopeless.
At exactly the right time in human history, divine intervention did occur: Christ died for the ungodly. By the blood of His atoning sacrifice, God’s holy wrath was satisfied (i.e., propitiated). Reconciliation is now possible through the one mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). We, the ungodly, can now be saved from God’s wrath through Christ.
Unending hostility and bitterness toward God are not inescapable. Everlasting estrangement from God is not unavoidable. Eternal punishment—the second death—is not inevitable.
Because of His daring and incredible love and Christ’s innocent blood, we can be saved from God’s holy and just wrath.
