There is a Difference!

“And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the Lord by His prophets” (2 Chronicles 29:25).

“but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:18-19).

One of these Bible passages clearly authorizes the use of mechanical instruments of music in the praise of God, and one passage clearly authorizes the use of the heart as the instrument to accompany the singing of God’s praise. There is a difference!

One of these Bible passages is applicable to the worship done at the temple which was built by Solomon in Jerusalem, and one passage is applicable to the worship engaged in by the holy temple which is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone. There is a difference!

One of these Bible passages is found in the Old Testament and states a clear expectation of God’s will for the Jews who were obliged to obey the Law of Moses, and one is found in the New Testament and is a clear expression of God’s will for Christians who are obliged to obey the law of Christ. There is a difference!

One of these Bible passages commands singing and playing with your hands, and one commands singing and playing with your heart. There is a difference!

One of these passages describes a cappella (“from the chapel”) music, and one does not. There is a difference!

Clearly, there is a difference between what God authorizes in New Testament worship and what He authorized in the Old Testament.
