“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:19-22).
Every structure—large or small, plain or fancy—cannot endure any longer than its foundation. To build a temple which can withstand centuries of weather it must have a solid base.
From the tower of Babel to today, no temple has been constructed on a foundation like Christ’s. Its cornerstone—essential to its strength, stability, and longevity—is Jesus Christ Himself. The massive bedrock truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:18) is the firm, indestructible, and unique foundation which neither time nor the gates of Hades can prevail against (Matthew 16:19).
The foundation of Christ’s temple which is perfectly fitted together with its chief cornerstone includes the four apostles (Matthew, John, Paul, and Peter) and four prophets (Mark, Luke, James, and Jude) who were guided into all truth by the Spirit of truth (John 16:13). As promised by Christ, the Holy Spirit taught them all things, brought to their remembrance all things Jesus said, and told them of the things to come (John 14:26; 16:13). Therefore, in their written word (i.e., the New Testament) we have been given all things which pertain to life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). This foundation is sure because Jesus Himself said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matthew 24:35).
All that remains today of Diana’s temple is a lone pillar. Only Jesus has a temple with an imperishable cornerstone and foundation.
