“Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12) has deservedly been given the moniker of “the Golden Rule”. In addition to the gold of superiority, logic, and simplicity (see yesterday’s blog), have you ever pondered how much more priceless spiritual treasure is found in this worthy code of conduct?
It has the gold of practicality. Treating others as you want to be treated is do-able. This code of conduct is not so mysterious and heavenly sounding that it is of no earthly good. It is thoroughly practical.
It has the gold of universality. Every functional person on planet Earth knows exactly how they want to be treated. This code faces no barriers caused by nationality or race.
It has the gold of Scriptural authority. “For this is the Law and the Prophets” demonstrates that the Golden Rule is in perfect harmony with everything God revealed in the first thirty-nine books of the Bible. Like Jesus Himself (Matthew 5:17-18), the Golden Rule does not destroy the Law or the Prophets, it fulfills them. It has all the weight of the Scriptures’ authority behind it.
What an immense treasure of gold is found in the Golden Rule.
