Godly priorities are essential to righteous living.
Just as following the money will determine where your heart is (Matthew 6:19-21), there is a day and night difference between one whose spiritual eyes are solely focused on godly values (i.e. walking in light) and one whose spiritual eyes are not (i.e. walking in darkness).
Jesus states it this way: “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness” (Matthew 6:22-23).
The spiritually pathetic church in Laodicea sadly illustrates the somber truth about unrighteous values and priorities among Jesus’ disciples. Because of their material prosperity, they believed themselves to be rich, wealthy, and in need of nothing (Revelation 3:17). But Jesus declared they did not even know that—spiritually speaking—they were wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked; they were in urgent need of gold refined by fire, white garments to cover the shame of their nakedness, and eye salve by which they could truly see themselves as God did (Revelation 3:17-18).
When you obey 2 Corinthians 13:5’s command to examine yourself as to whether you are in the faith, do you use your material wealth or spiritual treasures as the measuring stick?
There’s a day and night difference between them.
