A Generous Eye

“He who has a generous eye will be blessed, for he gives of his bread to the poor” (Proverbs 22:9).

Generosity is a recurring fruit of a gracious heart. When contributing to the Great Collection, the churches of Macedonia abounded in liberality because of the place the grace of God had in their hearts (2 Cor. 8:1-2). They were freely willing to give beyond their ability (2 Cor. 8:3) because of Christ’s grace (2 Cor. 8:9), God’s ability to make all grace abound toward them (2 Cor. 9:8), and the exceeding grace of God in His “indescribable gift” (2 Cor. 9:15) of Christ and His gospel.

A generous eye is seen in hands which personally give of one’s bread to the needy. It is blessed because “it is more blessed to given than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Honest labor—doing that which is beneficial to others—which results in helping those who are in need (Eph. 4:28) is what every new creature in Christ is to be doing (Eph. 4:24).

A man with an evil eye hastens after riches (Prov. 28:22). A man with a generous eye is a gracious and benevolent giver; he will be blessed (Prov. 22:9).

Which kind of eye do you have?
