Liars vs. Truth Tellers

“A false witness shall perish, but the man who hears him will speak endlessly” (Proverbs 21:28).

Lies matter, because truth matters. Intentional, premeditated lies which pervert justice in a community are egregious crimes. These unrighteous violations of truth are a reproach to any people, debasing a nation and its culture (Prov. 14:34). Like all liars, a false witness shall perish. The righteous God will forever punish them in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone (Rev. 21:8).

As the italicized word “him” indicates, the second half of this proverb requires some guesswork. The two most plausible interpretations are:

  • The “him” is not needed; the focus of this statement needs to be upon “hears”. The man who listens attentively to the facts and only reports them to others will never have trouble remembering what he says. His accurate report will stand forever; no amendments or addendums will be needed.
  • The “him” should be “Him”. The man who hears and heeds God and His word will only speak the truth. This is what God commands, so this is what a righteous man does. Like Abel, the veracity of his word yet speaks, even after his death (Heb. 11:4).

Both interpretations correspond accurately to reality. Both interpretations uphold the truth that lies matter, because truth matters.
