“He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich” (Proverbs 21:17).
The world is rife with “Get Rich Quick” schemes. These ploys usually are intended to do the exact opposite of what they advertise. They usually are “Get Poor Quick” schemes.
In addition to those, Satan offers other surefire ways to end up physically, monetarily, and spiritually bankrupt. These are usually viewed as respectable and “fun”, but their end point of poverty remains.
Hedonism—being a lover of pleasure rather than a lover of God—is a surefire way to get poor quickly. Spending hundreds of dollars on alcohol for a party will surely leave a mess of vomit and regret in its wake. Being a hedonist is exorbitantly expensive, and—as the prodigal (i.e., wasteful) son will testify—incredibly degrading.
“He who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.”
