“A man’s steps are of the Lord; how then can a man understand his own way?” (Proverbs 20:24).
The Bible plainly declares and frequently demonstrates how God’s providence (working all things together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose—Rom. 8:28) is fully and ever functioning in this universe over which He is sovereign. Like a potter shaping a piece of clay, God imperceptibly shapes the history of nations and the lives of individuals based upon their attitude and reaction to His will (Jer. 18:1-10).
Because God’s way and thoughts are so vastly superior to our own (Is. 55:8-9), discerning the providence of God in our daily lives is often beyond our capabilities. This inscrutability necessitates a sturdy faith—like Abraham’s when Isaac and he traveled to Mount Moriah with the knife, wood, and fire for the sacrifice which Abraham assured Isaac: “My son, God will provide” (Gen. 22:8). The patriarch’s loyalty to God and his faith in God never wavered (Rom. 4:19-21).
Nothing in your life or mine is mundane. The pilgrimage of faith is an epic journey. Walking in the path of obedience, tenaciously trusting the Sovereign God and His providence is the only wise way to live.
Don’t live by sight; live by faith in God and His providence (2 Cor. 5:7). Steps of faith are steps “of the Lord”.
