“The lazy man will not plow because of winter; he will beg during harvest and have nothing” (Proverbs 20:4).
Prior to creating a wife for Adam (Gen. 2:18-25), God gave him a job. It would be his divinely assigned duty to cultivate and keep the garden of Eden (Gen. 2:15). Working to provide for oneself and his family is not demeaning or demonic. From the beginning, God’s mindset has been: If a man will not work, neither shall he eat (2 Thes. 3:10).
Because we live in a cause-and-effect world (see April 29th’s post), there are blights on human existence which are directly and indirectly caused by laziness. Panhandlers and beggars on the street corners of many cities are there simply because they prefer living off your hard-earned money, not theirs.
A man too lazy to prepare and plant his field of wheat because it is “too cold” for his liking will have future consequences caused by his laziness: He will beg during harvest because he has nothing. His laziness and pitiful excuses in the fall will produce a bumper crop of want in the summer. When you have sown nothing, you will have nothing to reap. And you will.
