A Lesson Learned from David and his Harp

“A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men” (Proverbs 18:16).

As a young man, a shepherd from Bethlehem became a member of the royal household. King Saul’s summons of David was entirely because of his skill as a harpist (1 Sam. 16:16)—Saul had no knowledge of Samuel’s covert anointing of David to Israel’s next monarch (1 Sam. 16:13). Talent and the hard work needed to refine and improve it, not self-promotion, is the wisest and best way to make your way in life. “Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth” (Prov. 27:2).

Like the five and two talent servants (in Mat. 25:14-30), steward well what your master has given you. Develop and hone the God-given skills you have. Work diligently to turn potential into ability. All who do will stand before the great Lord of lords and hear Him say: “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord” (Mat. 25:21, 23).

David and his harp teach a very simple, yet significant, lesson: Earthly and spiritual success are well deserved when you have discovered and developed your talents.

Be vigilant to shun self-promotion. Be diligent to pursue self-improvement.
