“Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; though they join forces, none will go unpunished” (Proverbs 16:5).
Solomon’s father David wrote a Messianic masterpiece when he composed Psalm 2. This inspired song begins with the nations, people, kings, and rulers enraged, and in an uproar—taking counsel together on how they could successfully defy the authority and sovereignty of Jehovah’s Messiah (vv. 1-3).
God’s response to these abominably proud people and their intention to join forces was: “He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; the Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, and distress them in His deep displeasure (vv. 4-5).
Human pride is such an abomination to Jehovah, He promises to “break them with a rod of iron” and “dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel” (v. 9).
Often, the maxim “There is strength in numbers” is accurate. However, it is not when the proud in heart join forces to oppose the living God. They will not go unpunished.
