Your Heart’s Treasure

“The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness” (Proverbs 15:14).

The reason why “the lips of the wise disperse knowledge” (Prov. 15:7) is because his heart continually seeks it. Like many commodities in life, knowledge is gained by diligent and focused effort; it is not accidentally attained. This is true regardless of whether the body of knowledge pursued is in the study of science, mathematics, language, or Scripture.

Through diligence, every Christian can increase his knowledge of Scripture (2 Pet. 1:5). Growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Pet. 3:18) is not an attainable objective only for the spiritually elite; rather, it is an accomplishment every one of its passionate seekers can achieve. You gotta wanna.

The fool, however, refuses to avoid the profane and idle babblings and contradictions found in the vast body of pseudo-knowledge (1 Tim. 6:20); instead, one lacking in understanding feeds upon it with an unquenchable desire. Such foolish desires and actions will ever result in spiritual deviancy (1 Tim. 6:21). A lifetime will be spent “learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth (2 Tim. 3:7). A fool’s diet is an endless drivel of foolishness.
