“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, ‘Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.’ Now this, ‘Yet once more,’ indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain” (Hebrews 12:25-27).
At Mount Sinai and Mount Calvary there were terrifying earthquakes (Exodus 19:18; Matthew 27:51). These tremors only shook the earth. They served as sufficient proof of an even greater event God predicted through His prophet Haggai.
This prophecy (in Haggai 2:6) promises an event in which both heaven and earth are shaken. It will be of such a quality that anything which is not spiritual (and thus, eternal) will be shaken and destroyed. Like a purifying fire which separates dross from gold, this coming heaven and earth quake will expose and destroy all that is temporal and only leave the unshakable and permanent.
Though heaven and earth will pass away in this coming quake, the kingdom which Christ promised and built (Matthew 16:18) cannot be shaken. It is the place to be now and when the coming heaven and earth quake occurs.
“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear” (Hebrews 12:28).
