A Root of Bitterness

“…lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled” (Hebrews 12:15).

Every life has its share of heartaches, disappointments, and sorrows. The rains, winds, and floods of life come to the righteous and unrighteous alike (Matthew 7:24-27).

It is from life’s bitter moments that Satan seeks to germinate and cultivate a lifelong root of bitterness. A tragedy devastates the health of you or a loved one. A trust is viciously betrayed. A rash and foolish decision is made, and its consequences cannot be reversed.

These moments in your biography can provide the perfect soil for the rapid growth of the noxious plant called bitterness.

The deaths of her husband and two sons in a foreign country in less than a decade created bitterness in the heart of Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi (Ruth 1:2-5, 20-21). The death of her ten children, the loss of all their earthly wealth, and the horrific health malady that afflicted her husband were sufficient to land Job’s wife in a field infested with bitter roots (Job 1-2).

Bitterness is a spiritual cancer which you do not want taking root in your life. Being spiritually resilient and hastily purging yourself of the gall that comes in life’s cup are essential to not falling short of God’s grace.

Don’t allow bitterness to take root and defile you.
