“By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward” (Hebrews 11:24-26).
There are many similarities between Moses and Jesus. Both were powerful prophets of God. Both were redeemers who saved others from horrific bondage. Both were divinely appointed lawgivers. Both enjoyed intimate fellowship with Jehovah. Both also made stunning sacrifices to fit into God’s redemption of humanity.
The sacrifices Moses made to be useful to Jehovah were stunning and noteworthy: his renunciation of royalty, power, and pleasure; his willing choice to embrace suffering, affliction, and reproach; his heroic endurance of trials. By every human standard, Moses’ sacrifices are impressive.
Yet, these pale in comparison to Christ’s. The laying aside of His innate, royal prerogatives were not of an earthly dominion like Egypt but of His heavenly one. The suffering, affliction, and reproach He bore as the King of kings and Savior of the world were significantly greater than anything Moses endured.
The impressive sacrifices made my Moses help to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the sacrifices Christ made for us.
