The Need of Endurance

For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise:For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry’” (Hebrews 10:36-37).

Just like our physical bodies, our spirits have needs which are essential to receiving our great reward in heaven. To do the will of God faithfully unto death requires endurance.

The Greek word which is translated “endurance” is derived from the preposition hupo which means “under” and the verb meno which means “to abide, continue, dwell, endure, remain, stand”. Its fundamental idea is that of a Christian who does not cave under the stresses and distresses of life. It is someone like Job who refuses to quit (James 5:11) when all of life caves in.

Without this spiritual grit and determination, spiritual growth and maturity during the trials of life are impossible (James 1:3-4). Without this spiritual mental toughness, an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom will not occur (2 Peter 1:5-11). Without this spiritual stick-to-it-iveness, you will not do God’s will and receive the promise of eternal salvation of your soul.

“You have need of endurance.”
