“For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The Lord will judge His people.’ It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:30-31).
“Vengeance is Mine, and recompense…For the Lord will judge His people…” (Deuteronomy 32:35-36).
Days come and go. Seasons come and go. Generations come and go. God does not. He and His character have not changed in any way at any time. Therefore, these three truths about the living God are significant:
Truth # 1: Jehovah’s sovereign right to execute justice upon the wicked is timeless. It existed when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden. It was still true when Moses reminded Israel of it on the plains of Moab nearly 3, 500 years ago. It is true today and will be true forever.
Be not deceived, God is not mocked. No agent of evil ever “pulls the wool” over the eyes of Jehovah.
Truth # 2: Belonging to God and His people does not give you permission to live as you please. Sin is still sin. Evil is still evil. Apostasy is still the heinous spiritual crime it has always been. “The Lord will judge His people”—a significant truth of Moses’ day—remains true today. Jehovah’s exercise of His sovereign right to execute justice begins with His own house (1 Peter 4:17), and not everyone in that house who says to Him “Lord, Lord” shall enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 7:21-23).
Truth # 3: It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Every apostate plus everyone who knows not God and obeys not the gospel “shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power” (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).
Jehovah, His sovereignty, His right to judge all people, and Gehenna—the place He prepared for the devil and his angels—are not going away, ever.
