Two Certain Appointments

And as it is appointed for men to die once but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).

The popular saying is: “Two things in life are certain—taxes and death.” Hebrews 9:27 disagrees. Life’s two certainties are death and the judgment.

You have a certain appointment with death. Read about any person in history, he/she has a birth date and a death date. Even though Methuselah lived 969 years, the final page of his biography reads: “and he died” (Genesis 5:27). Unless our Lord returns first, neither you nor I am getting out of this world like Enoch and Elijah did. We will “go the way of all the earth”. Though its exact day and time are unknown, you have a certain appointment with death.

You also have a certain appointment with God’s judgment. Instantly after your body and soul have separated, your immortal spirit will be ushered into the unseen place (i.e., Hades), and you will begin experiencing the extreme blessedness of obedient faith or the excruciating torment of disobedience. Though God’s verdict is determined by how you choose to live now, you have a certain appointment with God’s judgment.

Everything in life pales in comparison to the gravity and significance of your two certain appointments.
