“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:14-15).
Sin alienates man from God (Romans 5:6). It creates a vast chasm between the sinner and the Sinless (Isaiah 59:1-2). Only a perfect mediator could bridge the gulf of sin and reconcile mankind to God.
Only one perfect mediator exists (1 Timothy 2:5; John 14:6). These two verses give three exclusive reasons why Jesus is the one and only perfect mediator.
-
His nature. Jesus, the man from Nazareth, was also the Son of God from heaven. Fully human. Fully deity. The perfect nature for both God and mankind.
-
His transcendence and imminence. He now resides in heaven, away from any specific geographic location on earth. This transcendence makes Him available to everyone on earth. He is also near at hand (i.e., imminent). He is capable of ushering us into the presence of God at any time and from anywhere. Ever in the presence of God and His throne, yet always available to every child of God. A perfect situation for both God and mankind.
-
His knowledge of temptation without any knowledge of sin. He is fully acquainted with every device and scheme Satan uses to lure humans into sin and a state of alienation from God. Yet, He never sinned. He is the sympathetic, yet sinless, mediator. The perfect relationship for both God and mankind.
