The Spirit of Bondage vs. The Spirit of Sonship

For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the spirit of sonship by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father’” (Romans 8:15).

Because God’s glorious grace is multi-faceted, the New Testament boldly proclaims it in many different ways. Romans 8:15 is one of them.

Though you were soldier-slaves of the Arch Enemy, when you are reconciled to God via the gospel of peace, you do not serve God with a spirit of bondage and cowering fear. You are not His slave; you are His son. A rightful son with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of every one of His other sons.

Regardless of whether you are a young babe in His family who can only speak of Him as “Abba” or a mature, full-grown son to whom He is your Father and Friend, you are part of God’s family. You are His heir and your elder brother’s co-heir.

What amazing grace!
