“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the spirit of sonship by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father’” (Romans 8:15).
Because God’s glorious grace is multi-faceted, the New Testament boldly proclaims it in many different ways. Romans 8:15 is one of them.
Though you were soldier-slaves of the Arch Enemy, when you are reconciled to God via the gospel of peace, you do not serve God with a spirit of bondage and cowering fear. You are not His slave; you are His son. A rightful son with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of every one of His other sons.
Regardless of whether you are a young babe in His family who can only speak of Him as “Abba” or a mature, full-grown son to whom He is your Father and Friend, you are part of God’s family. You are His heir and your elder brother’s co-heir.
What amazing grace!
