Several years ago, author Neil Postman wrote an excellent book that was titled Amusing Ourselves to Death. The “death” his title referred to is the death of a vibrant national culture in America. His book provides ample proof for this title and conclusion.
In the years that have transpired since I read his book, I have often wondered how frequently God’s people have been amusing themselves to death spiritually. Think about that the next time you reach for the remote control. How often in a day do you and I prioritize amusement over spiritual growth?
“Add to your faith” is commanded by God (2 Peter 1:5-7). “Amuse yourself ” is not.
