Like any piece of fertile soil, an honest and good heart must be carefully and purposefully cultivated to produce the fruit of righteousness. When your heart is properly protected and tended to, the abundant harvest will include righteous lips.
So, what needs to be cultivated into the soil of your heart to get righteous lips?
- A profound reverence for sacred things and an utter abhorrence of evil things. When it comes to holy and unholy things, neutrality is sinful. Either you abhor evil and things which are spiritually unclean (Romans 12:9), or you sin. Either you cling to good and sacred things (Romans 12:9), or you sin.
- An annihilation of every idle and corrupt thing. Corrupt words are spiritually worthless, rotten things. At no time are they to cross the threshold of your lips (Ephesians 4:29). If they are not allowed entrance into your mind or are annihilated should they covertly gain entrance, you will be able to heed Jesus’ somber warning concerning idle words in Matthew 12:36.
- A passionate zeal for integrity. Being fanatical about keeping your word is essential to the cultivation of righteous lips. Every “yes” you speak matters. Every “no” you say matters. Any other mindset is unacceptable.
“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7).
Cultivate your heart wisely.
