It ought not come as any surprise that Jesus’ sermon on righteousness addresses fidelity to one’s word (Matthew 5:33-37) immediately after discussing unlawful divorce (Matthew 5:31-32). One significant reason why Jehovah hates divorce is because at least one person in any divorce has failed to keep his/her word.
If a permitted divorce (Matthew 19:9) has occurred, then the fornicating mate has failed to keep his/her vows of marital fidelity. Both God and the innocent mate have been lied to.
If an unlawful divorce has occurred (Matthew 5:32), then at least one mate (and possibly both) has failed to keep his/her vow of marital fidelity.
Jehovah is righteous. Because He is righteous, He is eternally faithful to His word.
To be righteous, you must be faithful to your word. Not only in matters of marital vows, but in every day conversation: “let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one” (Matthew 5:37).
