Echoing through the history of humanity is the sweet kindness, tender pity, enduring mercy, and compassionate love of Jehovah—the God of gods and Lord of lords. From the creation of the heavens and earth in Genesis to the giving of a new heavens and new earth in Revelation and beyond, His mercy endures forever.
This is the thunderous, reverberating message of Psalm 136. Each of its twenty-six verses ends with the same refrain “For His mercy endures forever”. His compassionate love can be clearly seen in His creation (vv. 4-9), in His deliverance (vv. 10-15), in His providence and protection (vv. 16-25).
No wonder the psalm begins and ends with these words: “Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever…Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven! For His mercy endures forever” (vv. 1, 26).
